Since the Beijing 2008 Olympics have started few athletes have amazed me so far. The first was China's Liu Chunhong.Damn was she a strong woman. She broke 3 weightlifting world IN 1 Day. All the other competitors were at their second or third attempt for Clean and Jerk lift while Liu Chunhong came out to stage and showed them what weightlifting was all about. She came on and at her first attempt, secured first place. Her second attempt broke the Olympic Record and her third attempt broke the World Record lifting 158 kilos(3 of me!). Not to mention she also broke the world record for the snatch lifting 128 kilos and also the total combined weight lifted by lifting a total of 286 kilos in 3 attempts. Now isn't that something. The next person to amaze me is non other than U.S.A's top swimmer Michael Phelps. Well although it was pretty much anticipated that he would come out tops for swimming in this year's Olympics, I never expected him to break all the World Records in the events he's participating in. So far he's participated in 7 events. First Event - 400 m individual medley - 4:03.84 NEW WORLD RECORD Second Event - 4 x 100 m freestyle relay - 3:08.24 NEW WORLD RECORD Third Event - 200 m freestyle - 1:42.96 NEW WORLD RECORD Fourth Event - 200 m butterfly - 1:52.03 NEW WORLD RECORD Fifth Event - 4 x 200 m freestyle relay - 6:58.56 NEW WORLD RECORD Sixth Event - 200 m individual medley - 1:54.23 NEW WORLD RECORD Seventh Event - 100 m butterfly - 50.58 NEW OLYMPIC RECORD Courtesy of Wikipedia. His Eighth and final event is 4 x 100 m medley relay which I think another WORLD RECORD is going to be broken. I swear this guy is like a fish, his jump start already beats the rest of the swimmers by half a body, when he switches around the 50m mark, he pushes himself much deeper and further into the water than the rest to extend his lead and his freestyle technique is what I believe has reached the pinnacle of perfection. Michael Phelps is a near perfect swimmer. The last athlete to amaze me came along today. His name is USAIN BOLT, hailing from Jamaica. This guy is extraordinary, he has this aura around him that at the very moment you look at him, anyone would go "WOW, this guy looks really fast". I first saw him yesterday at the 100m heats where he easily thrashed the rest of the other competitors. Can you believe this guy is so fast, that at the 50m mark he has almost a 8m lead from the rest of the runners. This was what happened in the heat and what shocked me is the fact that he started jogging and waving to the crowd from the 70m mark. The timing for his heat was 9.99sec. Scientists have calculated that the fastest any human being can run 100m is 9.48sec and with careful calculations at the rate things are progressing, this is expected to only happen probably in the year 2162. But I doubt that today! USAIN BOLT is the fastest man that will ever walk this earth. Today he broke HIS own World Record of 9.72sec with a timing of 9.68sec and I'd like to stress, he jogged to the finish line again from the 70 or 80m mark. So yea...I'm still waiting to see the day he sprints the whole 100m. I think he'd make 9.48sec then. And he's still participating in the 200m race and the 4 x 100m relay. I don't really see anyone challenging him and the Jamaican team for the Gold this year for these events. Yup, that's all I wanted to blog about today, my Olympic experience so far. Anyway, if there "happens" to be any video of USAIN BOLT in action today on YouTube or anywhere, I'm sure to post it up here. |
